Donating

  • Why not just give to candidates?

Candidate campaigns pour money into short-lived ads and consultants, then shut down after Election Day. Community-based organizing groups reach voters through trusted, person-to-person outreach and keep building power year-round, which shapes who gets elected and what policies pass.

  • Movement Voter Project vs. PAC vs. Fund: What's the difference?

Movement Voter Project (501(c)(4)), Movement Voter PAC, and Movement Voter Fund (501(c)(3)) compared: partisan vs. nonpartisan work, tax deductibility, and FEC disclosure.

  • Why are PAC donations so helpful for winning elections?

PAC dollars are the hardest to raise and the most effective for winning elections, because they can be spent 100% on partisan work. That lets organizers tell voters exactly which candidates to support and why.

  • What is ActBlue? Why does MVP use it for online donations?

ActBlue is the most widely used platform for processing online donations to Democratic and progressive candidates and organizations. MVP uses it because it processes gifts efficiently and moves funds quickly, and neither MVP nor ActBlue sells your data.

  • Will my donor information stay private?

Gifts to Movement Voter Project and Movement Voter Fund are never publicly disclosed, and MVP will never sell, rent, or lease your information. Movement Voter PAC donors who give more than $200 are listed on the FEC website, just as they would be for a gift to a federal candidate.

  • How much of my donation goes to "overhead" and fees?

Over the past six years, 89.7% of MVP’s funding has gone to program and 10.3% to core operations (what others call “overhead”), including processing fees.

  • Will I receive an acknowledgement or tax receipt?

Yes, you’ll receive an acknowledgement, but not a tax receipt, because gifts to Movement Voter Project and Movement Voter PAC aren’t tax-deductible. Online gifts get an emailed receipt from ActBlue, and MVP thanks donors by email or mail whenever we have their contact information.

  • Are there limits on how much I can give?

No. There are no legal caps on contributions to Movement Voter PAC, Movement Voter Project, or Movement Voter Fund.

  • Can I make a restricted gift to a specific region, state, or focus area?

Yes! We’re happy to direct restricted gifts to specific regions, states, or focus areas, with a recommended minimum of $25,000 (or less for a first-time gift or one tied to larger giving). Restrictions must be in writing. Contact advisor@movement.vote to set one up.

  • How do I change or cancel my recurring donation?

If you give monthly through ActBlue, you can update your card or number of months, or cancel, anytime through ActBlue, and ActBlue Express users can also change the amount. Need help? Contact us and we’ll take care of it.

  • Can I donate if I am a U.S. resident with a green card?

Yes. Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) have the same rights as U.S. citizens to donate to PAC, 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(3) organizations.

  • Can I donate if I am a federal contractor?

Yes, in most cases. Employees of federal contractors can give to Movement Voter PAC, Movement Voter Project, and Movement Voter Fund. The only restriction is on PAC gifts from businesses or sole proprietors that hold a federal contract themselves.

  • Can I donate by check, wire, stock, or DAF?

Yes! You can give by check, wire/ACH, or stock transfer, and you can make DAF, qualified charitable distribution (QCD), and bequest gifts to Movement Voter Fund, the 501(c)(3) sibling to Movement Voter Project. For gifts over $10,000, these methods avoid online processing fees.
